How to register a child

Use of Rejsekort as an app

With the Rejsekort app, your child can travel as a “Child” or “Youth.”

When you enter your child’s date of birth during setup in the app, the correct category is selected automatically. So there’s nothing you need to do – but your child must be able to show proof of age during ticket inspection.

To travel as a “Child,” you must be between 0–16 years old.

To travel as “Youth,” you must be between 16–18 years old.

Later in 2025, it will also be possible to register a child with a disability in the Rejsekort app.

For a child to use the Rejsekort app, they must be registered with their personal information. Therefore, it is not possible to travel anonymously with the Rejsekort app.

The child must initially keep their Anonymous Rejsekort.

There will be a longer transition period where anonymous users can still use Rejsekort as a card. Later, a new solution with physical equipment and cards will be introduced for those who either do not wish to or cannot use the Rejsekort app. We will notify you well in advance before this change takes effect.

How to register a child

You can now register a child in Rejsekort as an app as a parent or guardian.

Important: You must first be registered in Rejsekort as an app yourself and have a payment method linked. You do not need to be an active user of the app, but you must be registered and have a payment method connected before you can help your child get started.

You can find our guide to registering a child here [link to guide – either PDF or step-by-step guide on the website].

Also remember, if you do not have MitID to confirm that you are over 18 years old, you must verify your age using this application form before you can register your child(ren) in the app: (Insert link to application form ‘Confirm age when registering a child in Rejsekort app’).

If you would like help registering your child in the app, you are always welcome to call Rejsekort Customer Centre so we can assist you and your child in getting started.

To register a child, the adult creating the profile must be either the holder of parental custody or the child’s legal guardian.

This is a requirement because only the holder of parental custody or the guardian can enter into agreements on behalf of the child and accept the app’s terms and conditions – including allowing the collection and processing of the child’s personal data, such as location data.

During the registration process, you will be asked to declare that you are the holder of parental custody or the legal guardian of the child.

To register your child in Rejsekort as an app without MitID, you must fill out a form to confirm that you are over 18 years old.

You must attach documentation of your age in the form. You can find the link here, where you can also see which types of documentation are accepted: (Insert link to RESS form ‘Validate age of parent or guardian for child in Rejsekort app’).

Once your age has been verified, you will receive an email with the result, and you can then proceed to register your child in Rejsekort as an app.

Please note that the processing time at Rejsekort Customer Centre is approximately 10 business days.

Also remember that you must register yourself as a user in the app before you can create your child’s profile. You do not need MitID to register as a user in the app with MobilePay as the linked payment method.

Can children and young people add a payment card in the app themselves?

No, children aged 15–17 cannot yet add a payment card in Rejsekort as an app on their own.

Later in 2025, they will be able to register a payment card and pay for their own travel without the adult being able to see their travel history.

However, the guardian is still liable for any debt and can access information about the debt if payment is required.

On the day your child turns 16, their profile will automatically change from “Child” to “Youth” in the app.

Please note that this only affects the fare. The app will continue to function with the same features, options, and payment setup as before.

On the day your child turns 18, their profile will automatically transition to an Adult profile in the app.

This also means that your legal responsibility for your child’s travel ends. The payment method you have shared with your child will also automatically be deactivated on the same day.

Therefore, your child must activate their Adult profile before taking their first trip with the Rejsekort app as an 18-year-old.

To travel again using the Rejsekort app, your child must complete three steps in the app:

  1. Accept the terms and conditions for the Rejsekort app
  2. Add and verify their email address
  3. Add their own payment method

We will send information about all of this to both your child and you before your child’s 18th birthday via app notifications and email.

The reason we need to verify your age is that children under the age of 18 are not allowed to incur debt.

Therefore, a parent or guardian over the age of 18 must assume financial responsibility for the child for as long as the child uses the app, and up until their 18th birthday.

We do not retrieve or collect any other data from MitID about you, except a confirmation that you are over 18 years old.

At this time, it is unfortunately not possible to register your child with the “Disability” customer type in Rejsekort as an app.

Later in 2025, it will become possible for a guardian or holder of parental authority to register a child with the “Disability” customer type in the app.

Requirements for telephone

System requirements

iPhone: Your child must have an iPhone with iOS 15 (or newer).

Android: Your child must have a smartphone with Android 8.0 (or newer).

SIM card: Your child must have a working SIM card that allows mobile data (the Rejsekort app uses approx. 1 MB per hour).

Battery: Your child's phone must have enough battery for the entire journey. The app does not use more power than other apps, but there must be enough battery for the child to reach their destination and show their ticket if there’s a ticket inspection.

Payment: Your child’s app must be linked to a valid payment method through your app. You can currently use MobilePay and a selection of payment cards. More payment card options will be added later.

Permissions: You must grant the app the necessary permissions, including location sharing. This is required so we can calculate your child’s travel fare as accurately as possible.
You can read more about our terms and conditions for the Rejsekort app.

Location:

The Rejsekort app must have access to your child’s location data to accurately register the journey.

We track your child’s location like this: When the child opens the Rejsekort app, during the journey, and until shortly after checking out. This ensures that we calculate the correct fare and confirm that the child has checked out at the end of the trip.
You can read more about location data sharing under the question "Why do I need to share my location?" at My account and my data | rejsekort.dk

If your child has an iPhone, select “Always allow.” When setting up the child’s profile in the Rejsekort app, the iPhone will first suggest “Allow while using the app.” Right after, you can then choose “Always allow.”

If your child has an Android phone, go to Location and select “Allow while using the app.”

Important: If your child turns off location services during the trip, the ticket is no longer valid, and this may result in a fine during ticket inspection.

Motion:

With motion data enabled, the app can detect if the child is moving, walking, moving away from a vehicle, and distinguish between types of transport. This helps the app calculate the correct journey and price more accurately.

Motion data is also required for using the ‘Smart check-out’ feature, which helps if your child occasionally forgets to swipe to check out.

If your child has an iPhone, allow access to Motion & Fitness Activity.

If your child has an Android phone, allow Physical activity.

Notifications:

Choose “Enabled” to take advantage of all app features. With notifications, the app can remind your child to check out and provide a fare summary after the trip.

Background App Refresh:

Set to “Enabled” so the Rejsekort app can continue tracking the location if the phone restarts.

Mobile Data:

Set to “Enabled” so your child’s phone can communicate with the Rejsekort app during the journey to ensure a valid ticket.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth:

We recommend enabling these to improve the accuracy of your child’s location data.

Battery usage:

Battery consumption for the Rejsekort app has been tested on various phone models and operating systems. On average, the Rejsekort app uses about 5% battery per hour. Battery drains faster if other apps or functions are running at the same time.

Please remember that your child is responsible for having a working phone with enough battery for the entire journey.
If your child’s phone runs out of battery, the ticket is no longer valid.

Mobile data usage:

To calculate the correct fare for your child’s journey, the Rejsekort app requires access to your child’s location data.

During a trip, the Rejsekort app sends and receives approximately 1 MB of data per hour.

Your child can still use Rejsekort as a card, just as they always have.

We know that some customers, for various reasons, either do not wish to or cannot use the Rejsekort app. That’s why we’re actively working on an alternative solution.

Rejsekort as a card will not be phased out until a suitable alternative is in place for those who cannot use the app. We will provide plenty of notice before any changes are made to Rejsekort as a card.
